Film review on 'Promising Young Woman'

2022. 1. 22. 07:30World/Culture

I watched "Promising Young Woman" around this time last year. The portrayal of victim-blaming and PTSD was brutally realistic; there's nothing overly graphic (in my opinion), but the buildup to expose systematic, institutional, and legal flaws around sexual assault was executed exceptionally well. It was almost gut-wrenching and painful to watch.

Anyone who finds John Wick's vengeance cathartic would find this movie quite fascinating. Both movies show how the loss of a loved one can completely shatter one's moral compass and derail one from living a peaceful, normal life without seeking revenge.

"Promising Young Woman" is derived from the People vs. Turner case, also known as the Stanford rape case. The judge reduced Turner's sentence from six months to three because he was an Olympic hopeful, "Promising Young Man." Upon more research about the case, I was relieved to know that the judge was recalled, which gives me some hope.

Chanel Miller, referred to as "Emily Doe" in court documents, made a turnaround as an artist celebrating life and recovery and has her inaugural exhibition at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum. I'm excited to finish her book, "Know My Name," and then check out her artwork this week as a treat for myself!
